The term off the grid refers to a method of construction that relies on renewable energy sources rather than traditional public utility sources provided by the utility "grid." In such construction, the home or building constructed does not rely on municipal water supply, sewer, gas, electrical or similar utility services. A true "off the grid" house is able to operate completely independently of traditional public utility services.

340 Watt Off Grid Cabin Power System
This 340 watt kit will produces about 1.1 kWh per day with 5 average sun hours.
It will run high efficiency lighting, 19" TV/VCR, stereo, laptop computer, blender, and DC submersible and pressurized water pump. While it's best to have a system designed for your specific situation, this small solar power system for a remote home works for many applications.
The battery bank will provide 5.0 kilowatt hours at the 20 hour charge rate and 50% depth of discharge.
To power an energy efficient refrigerator you would need to add an additional 340 Watts of solar panels or you could use a propane refrigerator.
