grid-tie solar home

Introduction

Welcome to our Solar Home Guide. This section of our website is dedicated to people who are interested in using solar energy from the sun to power their homes. There are many different terms out there for what we call on our website "Residential Solar Energy System." You may have heard some of them such as: Grid-Tie system, solar home system, residential solar system, solar power system, and the list goes on. What's important to realize is that these terms all refer to the same exact thing, which is a system for your home that provides solar electricity from the sun.

The main components that you will need to provide solar energy for your home are:

  • Solar Panels - Also known as solar modules and pv modules. They are all the same but are most commonly referred to as a solar panel. Their job is to take the sun's rays and convert it to usable electricity.
  • Inverter(s) - also known as a Grid-Tie Inverter, because Residential Solar Energy Systems are connected to the energy grid. The inverter takes D/C electricity generated by the solar panels and converts it into A/C electricity to use for your home. Depending on the size of the system, you may need more than one inverter.
  • Mounting / Racking - This is a general term for the structure that will support all of your solar panels, whether they are mounted on your roof or somewhere else.
There are many other components you will need for your system, but these are the largest pieces of the system.

Why Solar?

Invest in your energy and home: Own your electricity, increase your home's value
Benefits the environment: Minimize your carbon footprint
Solid technology: No moving parts

What is a Grid-tie or Utility tie or Utility interactive solar energy system?

When a house with solar power is linked to the utility grid it is called a grid-tie system. In the United States most of the electricity for homes comes by way of a utility grid. Basically homes are linked to the electric utility via power lines either buried or stretched along power poles which is commonly referred to as a utility grid. The grid serves as a large network to provide power to communities.

Due to rising costs of electricity and a movement away from "brown" power, citizens are taking back their independence by adding solar to their homes. You generate electricity free from the sun's abundant energy and it is converted into AC electricity. This solar powered electricity then flows backwards through your utility meter and each month you only pay the net of the meter reading. It is possible to lower or even eliminate your monthly electric bill and at the same time minimizing your carbon footprint!
